Help!!!! I transplanted a rose bush from the house I grew up in to my house last year. I get free plants all the time but this one was my grandmother's and it's the only thing I really, really wanted to survive. This is what it looked like in early June:

It's still alive but barely:-(
Too much sun?
Too much water?
Too much fertilzer?
Any suggestions? If you can help me save my grandmother's rose bush, you will be my new best friend:-)
Yikes! That does not bode well. Sadly, I do not have a green thumb. Perhaps a trip to the local nursery is in order?

Have you tried putting a little blood meal on it? Not too much, though. Oh, I hope you can save it!

They need lots of sun and well drained soil.
ReplyDeleteAnd the leaves do not like to get wet. Only water at the base or the leaves get get black spot/powdery mildew. My guess is that this is what happened. Did the leaves start yellowing and falling off? Were there any yellowish black spots on the leaves?
The fact that there is any green gives hope that it will make it, but I'm guessing you'll have to wait a year to see it rebound. Take very good care of it over the winter!
Looks just like something I would have tried to grow. I do not have a green thumb, therefore no advice :(

These are the instructions that I found for you. I'm already your friend though :)
What you need:
* Bucket
* Knife
* Bone meal
* Shovel
* Mulch
Soak the pot in a bucket of water until the soil is moist.
Cut off the bottom the pot and make a perpendicular cut up the side.
Dig a hole about twice as wide and 2" deeper than the pot. Backfill 2" of soil mixed with bone meal to the hole.
This was a thought is the rose planted near where a driveway is salted? The PH could be off.
Place the rose in the hole and make sure the bud union is about an inch above the soil line. Then remove the pot.
This was my thought is the union under soil level?
Next, water the plant's root ball and the surrounding soil in the hole. Add some soil to the hole and a little more water.
Firm the soil around the rose's root ball.
Add more soil and water thoroughly after all the soil is replaced.
Firm the soil around the rose and mulch. After planting the rose, it's important to water regularly.
I am not an expert but it looks like it might need some fertilizer and water, is it in a full sun spot? From my experiences rose usually like the sun? Maybe its just laying dormat. Not sure.
ReplyDeleteI'm no expert but,If I were you, I would get a bag of potting soil and a pot and repot it, get it back in good health and then place it in different places (roses like semi shade) until I found a place where it thrives, and then plant it there, soil and all. I hope it survives.

Do you still have some green on it? I'd dig it up, put it in a pot, and give it TLC. I'm terrible with roses, though. You'll have to consult an expert!

ReplyDeleteMy grandma always said you can cut a start off a rose bush and just stick it in the ground and it would grow. Not sure you have any limbs on this are for sure alive but you can try to get a new start.
I know they like to be watered at the root...that's about all I know.
Good luck, my friend. I know how you feel....I lost a tree my grandma had given to me. I got a start off one that she had given to my mom...but its not the same.

ReplyDeleteUhhhh I'm not the answer for this one either.. but let me know if you do get an answer, as my two of my three rose bushes are looking a little iffy right now! Good luck -- that is definitely a special plant.
